Electric gate services: FAQs

1. How much do electric gates cost in Glasgow?

The cost of electric gates depends on the entrance width, gate material, automation system, groundwork, safety equipment and access controls. Professionally supplied and installed residential electric gates in Glasgow typically cost between £3,500 and £10,000. Larger bespoke gates, sliding systems and advanced intercoms may cost more. We provide a free site survey and a detailed quotation based on your property and requirements.

2. Do I need planning permission for electric gates in Glasgow?

Many electric gate installations don’t require planning permission. In Scotland, gates are generally permitted up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre where they front a road. Different rules apply to listed buildings, conservation areas and some replacement boundaries. Because every property is different, you should confirm the requirements with your local planning authority before installation. Scottish Government guidance explains the current height restrictions.

3. Can you automate my existing driveway gates?

Yes, many existing manual gates can be converted into electric gates. Before recommending automation, we inspect the gate leaves, posts, hinges, alignment, weight and available opening space. We also assess potential trapping and crushing points so the completed system can operate safely. If your gates aren’t suitable in their current condition, we’ll explain what repairs or alterations are needed before automation.

4. What happens to electric gates during a power cut?

Electric gates can normally be opened manually during a power cut using the system’s manual-release key or lever. Battery backup may also be available for compatible automation systems, allowing the gates to continue operating temporarily. During handover, we show you where the manual release is located and how to use it safely. Never force an electric gate against its motor because this can damage the automation.

5. Are swing gates or sliding gates better?

Neither option is automatically better. Swing gates suit entrances with enough clear space for the gates to open and usually provide a traditional appearance. Sliding gates move sideways along the boundary, making them useful for sloping driveways, limited driveway depth and wider entrances. We assess your driveway gradient, available space, entrance width and intended use before recommending the most suitable system.

6. How long does electric gate installation take?

Installation time depends on the gate design, groundwork, electrical supply and access-control equipment. An automation upgrade for suitable existing gates may take only a few days on site. A complete bespoke installation takes longer because the gates must first be designed and fabricated, with posts, foundations and cabling prepared. We’ll provide an estimated schedule after completing your site survey.

7. How often should electric gates be serviced?

Most domestic electric gates should be professionally serviced at least once a year. High-use commercial gates, communal entrances and systems exposed to demanding conditions may require more frequent visits. A service should check the motors, hinges, alignment, electrical components, manual release and safety devices. The HSE advises that powered gates must be regularly checked and maintained to remain safe in use. HSE powered-gate guidance

8. Are electric gates safe for children and pets?

Electric gates can be safe when the complete system is properly designed, installed, risk-assessed and maintained. Depending on the entrance, protection may include photocells, safety edges, obstacle detection and controlled operating forces. These features must be positioned and tested for the hazards at that specific property. Children should still be supervised and should never play on or near a moving gate.

9. Can electric gates be controlled from a phone?

Yes. Depending on the chosen access-control system, you can operate your electric gates using a smartphone, remote fob, keypad, audio or video intercom, or GSM telephone system. Smartphone access is particularly useful when you want to let visitors or deliveries in without being at the entrance. We can recommend a system based on your internet connection, mobile signal, security needs and number of users.

Our electric gate repair call-out across Glasgow and the surrounding areas is £100 plus VAT, including the first hour on site. The engineer will inspect the system, identify the fault and explain any additional parts or labour required before further work proceeds. We repair problems involving motors, control panels, safety sensors, intercoms, access controls, hinges and damaged gate mechanisms.
