1. How much does electric gate installation cost in Glasgow?
A professionally supplied and installed residential electric gate system typically costs between £3,500 and £10,000. The final price depends on the entrance width, gate material, automation, groundwork, electrical supply, safety equipment and access controls. 2. Do I need planning permission to install electric gates?
Many residential gate installations don’t require planning permission. In Scotland, gates are generally permitted up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre where they front a road or extend beyond the elevation nearest a road. Planning permission may be required for conservation areas, listed buildings and taller gates. You should confirm the position with your local authority before work starts. 3. Are swing gates or sliding gates better for my driveway?
Swing gates are an attractive, traditional option where there is enough driveway depth for the gate leaves to open safely. Sliding gates move sideways along the boundary, making them better suited to sloping driveways, wider entrances or properties with limited space behind the gate. During your survey, we’ll assess the gradient, opening width, available space and expected level of use before recommending either design.
4. How long does an electric gate installation take?
The installation time depends on the design, fabrication, groundwork, electrical preparation and access-control equipment. Once the bespoke gates have been manufactured and the site is ready, installation is normally completed over several working days. Larger sliding gates, new pillars, extensive cabling or complex commercial entrances may take longer. Your quotation will explain the expected project stages and approximate schedule.
5. What is included in an electric gate installation?
Our installations can include the bespoke gates, posts, foundations, motors, control equipment, electrical work, safety devices and chosen access controls. We also configure and test the finished system, demonstrate the controls and show you how to use the manual release. Your written quotation will confirm exactly what is included and identify any planning, groundwork or third-party work required.
6. Do electric gates need a power supply?
Most electric gates require a suitable mains electricity supply running from the property to the entrance. The distance from the consumer unit, cable route, ground conditions and required motor power can affect the installation cost. During the site survey, we assess the available supply and explain any cabling or electrical preparation required. Battery backup may also be available for compatible systems.
7. Can electric gates open outwards onto the road?
Electric driveway gates should normally open inward or move sideways within your property. They must not swing across a public pavement, road or space used by other people. If the driveway is too short for inward-opening swing gates, a sliding, cantilever or alternative gate design may be more appropriate. We’ll check the available opening space and vehicle position during the site survey.
8. What safety features should electric gates have?
Safety requirements depend on the gate design and risks at the property. A suitable system may include photocells, safety edges, obstacle detection, force limitation and protected hinge or movement areas. The gate should also have an accessible manual release. Every installation must be considered as a complete machine rather than a collection of separate components. The HSE advises that powered-gate safety must be assessed for its particular location and use.
9. Can I control my electric gates using my phone?
Yes. Your gates can be operated using remote fobs, keypads, GSM intercoms, video-entry systems or compatible smartphone controls. You can choose a simple system for family access or a more advanced setup that lets you speak to visitors and open the gates remotely. The right option depends on your mobile signal, internet connection, number of users and security requirements.
