Electric Gate Not Working During a Power Cut? What to Do Safely

A power cut can leave an automatic gate closed, partly open or apparently unresponsive. The good news is that most professionally installed electric gates have a manual release mechanism, while some systems also include battery backup.


However, an electric gate is heavy moving machinery. Don’t force it, climb over it or attempt electrical repairs yourself. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep everyone away from the gate’s movement, crushing and trapping areas.

First, confirm whether it’s a power cut


Check whether electricity is unavailable elsewhere in your property.


If your home still has power but the gate doesn’t respond, the problem could be related to the gate’s power supply, control panel, safety sensors, motor or access-control equipment.


You can check for obvious issues such as:

  • A local power cut affecting the whole property

  • A damaged remote-control battery

  • An obstruction across the gate opening

  • Dirt, leaves or snow covering a photocell

  • Visible damage to the gate, motor or cabling


Don’t repeatedly reset electrical protection, remove the control-panel cover or touch damaged or wet electrical equipment. If the rest of your property has electricity, contact a qualified electric gate engineer.

Does an electric gate have battery backup?

Some electric gate systems have a backup battery that takes over automatically when the mains supply fails. This may allow the gate to complete a limited number of operations during the outage.


Not every system has one, and a backup battery won’t last indefinitely. Its performance depends on:

  • The age and condition of the battery

  • The size and weight of the gate

  • How frequently the gate is operated

  • Outdoor temperature

  • The type of motor and control equipment


A battery can also lose capacity as it ages. If your gate has battery backup but doesn’t operate during a power cut, don’t assume the motor has failed. The battery may be discharged, disconnected or ready for replacement.


Your backup battery should be checked during routine electric gate maintenance. If you're weighing up battery backup, it typically adds only a modest amount to your electricity bill.


How to open an electric gate manually

Most automatic gates have a manual release that disengages the motor so the gate can be moved by hand. The exact method differs between manufacturers and motor types, so use the instructions supplied with your system.


1. Keep the area clear

Make sure no people, pets or vehicles are within the gate’s movement area. Pay particular attention to gaps beside posts, hinges, rollers and sliding-gate tracks.

Never allow a child to operate the manual release or help move the gate.


2. Find the manual release

The release is normally located on or beside the motor. Depending on the system, it may use:

  • A dedicated release key

  • A lockable cover

  • A lever

  • A knob or handle

  • A cable-release mechanism


Keep the release key in a secure but accessible place. It shouldn’t be left inside an outdoor control box or somewhere you can’t reach when the gate is closed.


3. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions

Use the release key or lever exactly as shown in the gate’s user manual. Some systems require the electrical supply to be isolated before release, while others follow a different process.


Don’t remove electrical covers, dismantle the motor or use tools to force the release. If the mechanism is seized, damaged or unfamiliar, stop and contact an engineer.


4. Move the gate slowly

Once the motor has been correctly disengaged, move the gate slowly while remaining clear of hinges, posts, wheels and other trapping points.


Stop immediately if the gate:

  • Feels unusually heavy

  • Moves suddenly or uncontrollably

  • Rolls back on a slope

  • Comes off its track

  • Scrapes against the ground

  • Has damaged hinges, wheels or supports

  • Cannot be held safely


A properly maintained gate should remain mechanically stable when disconnected from its motor. If it doesn’t, don’t continue moving it.


5. Secure the gate safely

Once open or closed, secure the gate using the method recommended by the manufacturer. An uncontrolled gate can move because of wind, gravity or the slope of the driveway.


Don’t rely on a loose object, vehicle or person to hold it in position.


What should you never do during a power cut?

For your safety, avoid the following:

  • Don’t push against the motor before releasing it

  • Don’t climb over or squeeze through a partly open gate

  • Don’t put your hands near hinges, rollers or narrowing gaps

  • Don’t allow children or pets near the gate

  • Don’t pull the gate with a vehicle

  • Don’t dismantle the motor or control panel

  • Don’t bypass safety sensors or protective devices

  • Don’t make a temporary generator connection using extension leads

  • Don’t continue if the gate is unstable, damaged or unusually heavy


The Health and Safety Executive warns that powered gates can cause serious crushing and trapping injuries when they aren’t properly designed, installed or maintained.


Can a generator power an electric gate?

A generator may be suitable as part of a professionally designed backup-power system, particularly at commercial premises. However, it must not be connected to the gate or property wiring through an improvised cable or plug arrangement.


Any generator connection should be assessed and installed by a competent electrician using appropriate changeover and electrical-protection equipment. An incorrect connection could create an electric-shock, fire or back-feeding risk.


For most domestic properties, a compatible battery-backup system is usually a more practical option.


Will a solar-powered gate work during a power cut?

A purpose-designed solar gate normally charges a battery that supplies the motor. Because it doesn’t depend entirely on the property’s mains electricity, it may continue operating during a local outage.


However, solar power isn’t a quick emergency addition to an existing gate. The panel, battery capacity, motor and expected daily usage must all be correctly calculated. Poor weather, shading or an ageing battery can reduce performance.


Ask a competent gate installer to confirm whether solar power is suitable for your entrance and existing equipment.


What to do when the electricity returns

Don’t immediately operate the gate if someone has moved it manually.


First:

  1. Make sure people, pets and vehicles are clear.

  2. Check that the gate hasn’t been damaged or obstructed.

  3. Re-engage the manual-release mechanism according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  4. Restore the gate’s power only when it’s safe to do so.

  5. Test one complete opening and closing cycle from a safe position.


Confirm that the gate stops in the correct positions and that its photocells, safety edges and other protective devices respond normally.


Stop using the gate and arrange a professional inspection if it moves unpredictably, makes unusual noises, ignores a safety device or doesn’t remain securely engaged.


Prepare before the next power cut

A few simple checks can prevent a stressful situation later:

  • Locate the manual-release mechanism

  • Make sure you have the correct release key

  • Keep the user manual somewhere accessible

  • Ask every responsible adult how the release works

  • Have the backup battery tested during servicing

  • Save your gate engineer’s contact details

  • Keep the entrance and sliding-gate track clear

  • Never postpone repairs to damaged safety equipment


For commercial, communal or managed gates, the emergency procedure should also be documented and shared with authorised staff.


When should you call an electric gate engineer?

Contact a qualified engineer if:

  • You can’t find or operate the manual release

  • The release mechanism is damaged or seized

  • The gate is too heavy to move safely

  • The gate moves without control after release

  • A sliding gate has left its track

  • The hinges, wheels or posts appear damaged

  • The battery backup isn’t working

  • The gate remains faulty after power returns

  • A safety sensor or edge fails its test


If someone is trapped or there’s an immediate danger to life, call 999. Don’t attempt to move or dismantle the gate if doing so could make the situation worse.
